AFTRS

The Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) is a Commonwealth Government agency delivering a range of learning experiences including full-time Bachelor and Master of Arts courses and short courses. I was employed full-time at AFTRS for two years. My main task was to design, develop and support delivery of a range of short courses, specifically online Moodle components for Industry Certificates, 12-week blended courses with a vocational focus. (AFTRS Industry Certificates are practical and outcome focussed non-award courses. The curriculum is informed and validated by Industry Advisory Panels and mapped to media industry roles and skills requirements.)

As Instructional Designer, I collaborated with film, television, radio and digital industry practitioners, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), teachers and other stakeholders from various agencies to analyse/confirm the learning requirements, design/confirm the course scope, content, format, learning approach, curriculum details, and assessment. Other significant tasks included Moodle course development within very tight timeframes and ongoing, just-in-time professional development of course facilitators (eg those new to teaching and/or online delivery). I supported industry practitioners with critical selection and development of course content, including lesson plans for online and face-to-face lessons, assessment rubrics and further support related to day-to-day delivery of courses. Various 2020 tasks specifically addressed emerging protocols in response to COVID-19. Additionally, I contributed specific teaching, advice and professional development in areas including optimal practice for online delivery, learning design, digital pedagogy, elearning and options/protocols for transitioning face-to-face courses to blended and online.

The final short courses were successfully delivered to students both face-to-face (on-campus at Moore Park, Sydney) and online across Australia. Courses included Digital Producer, Production Accounting, Production Management (Scripted TV), Production Management (Unscripted TV), Writing a TV Series (Online), Script Assessment, Mobile Content Creation, Colour Grading and Radio Producer (among others).

The following professional development video briefly outlines the process of collaborating with an industry practitioner to produce Industry Certificate: Digital Producer.

The following professional development video outlines some broad insights related to collaborating with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs).
