The Association of Independent Schools of New South Wales (AISNSW) is a peak body supporting independent schools with services including advice and professional learning. I was employed full-time at AISNSW for almost two years, specifically within the (then recently created) Learning Design Hub (LDH) an internal unit formed in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic. As Learning Designer I contributed by “sharing, nurturing, and growing” a culture of learning design within the organisation. As part of this, I mentored selected teaching and other staff in learning design. I also designed and developed a range of online courses (authored mostly in Articulate Rise) for adult learners associated with the independent schools sector (ie office admin staff, teachers, school board members etc). These courses ranged from NESA accreditation workshops to governance-related issues for school board members. Many of the school governance courses featured specific (and often nuanced, strategic, and/or sensitive) learning on matters informed by state and federal legislation and other guidelines/parameters/requirements relating to child protection, executive supervision, financial governance, maintaining a not-for-profit status, and reputation risk. In the production process, I collaborated with AISNSW consultants, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), teachers, board members, principals, and other stakeholders within the independent school sector. My time at AISNSW offered unexpected insights and other professional learning. As such, I have a great understanding of the dynamics and culture of the NSW independent schools sector.
